Where to ride a dirt bike in Western Australia

Western Australia has more gazetted riding country than any other state, and the only registration scheme in the country built specifically for off-road bikes. Here are the spots we have on file, and the rules that govern them.

The rules in Western Australia

WA is the outlier. It is the only state with a registration category designed for bikes that never touch a public road, and it is the only state where you can legally ride without holding a motorcycle licence at all — provided you are in the right place.

Three places you can legally ride

  • Private property, with the owner’s permission.
  • Permitted ORV areas — land gazetted for off-road vehicle use by the state or a local government.
  • Commercial ride parks operating on private land.

Riding an unregistered bike anywhere else — road reserves, vacant blocks, bush tracks, beaches that are not gazetted — is an offence, and it is the single most common way riders in WA get fined.

ORV registration, not a licence

There is no off-road rider licence in WA. What there is instead is registration for the bike. The state’s guidance is explicit: before an unlicensed off-road vehicle can be used in a permitted ORV area, it must have ORV registration issued by the Department of Transport. Registration fees go back into maintaining ORV areas.

The minimum age to ride is eight. There is no supervision requirement set out in the state guidance beyond that, so venue rules apply.

If you need to cross a road

Crossing a public road — even just crossing it — puts you into a different scheme. That requires a conditional (restricted use) vehicle licence, which means a roadworthiness inspection and prior approval from the Department of Transport’s Vehicle Safety and Standards team. Do not assume a short link between two tracks is covered by ORV registration.

Where electric bikes sit

Nothing in WA’s published off-road guidance mentions electric motorcycles. The scheme turns on whether the bike is registered and where it is being ridden — not on what drives it. In practice that means an electric bike is treated the same as a petrol one for ORV purposes, but because no state guidance says so in as many words, confirm with the Department of Transport before you register.

General information only, checked against government sources in September 2026 — not legal advice. Rules change, and local governments set their own conditions. Confirm with the relevant agency and the venue before you ride.
