Where to ride a dirt bike in New South Wales

New South Wales has the tightest rules of any eastern state for unregistered bikes, and a common misconception about “rec rego” that catches riders out. Here are the spots we have on file, and what the law actually says.

The rules in New South Wales

NSW is the state where riders most often get caught out, because the rule most people believe exists does not.

There is no general recreational registration in NSW

Victoria has recreation registration. Western Australia has ORV registration. New South Wales has neither as a general scheme. The conditional registration category called “recreation vehicle” exists, but it is tied to one place: off-road motorcycles and quad bikes used within the Worimi Conservation Lands at Stockton Beach. It is not a general trail-riding registration, and it will not make an unregistered bike legal anywhere else.

State forests: registered bike, licensed rider, formed trails

Riding in NSW State forests is legal, but all three conditions apply at once. Forestry Corporation’s rules are explicit: vehicles, including motorcycles, must be registered, and the issued registration plate must be fitted and clearly displayed. Riders must be licensed as required by law, which rules out underage riding. And vehicles are only permitted on roads, formed vehicle trails and fire trails.

Creating new tracks and bush bashing is not permitted, and single tracks worn in by previous riders are not authorised routes just because they exist. Some forests exclude trail bikes entirely — Cumberland State Forest is one.

What that leaves for an unregistered bike

Private property with the owner’s permission, commercial ride parks, and club ride days. That is why every NSW spot in this directory is one of those three — there is no legal public-land option for an unregistered bike in this state.

Where electric bikes sit

NSW guidance on off-road riding does not mention electric motorcycles. The requirements turn on registration and rider licensing, not on propulsion. An electric bike that is not registered is in exactly the same position as an unregistered petrol bike. Confirm with Transport for NSW if you are planning to register one.

General information only, checked against government sources in September 2026 — not legal advice. Rules change, and local governments set their own conditions. Confirm with the relevant agency and the venue before you ride.
